The America Kennel Club (AKC) is the original kind of structured obedience courses here in
the USA. Not only can you find a wealth of knowledge about different dog breeds, breeders, breed
temperaments, canine sports, and everyday practical knowledge, but AKC also offers several dog
training courses that are recognized all over the nation:
S.T.A.R. Puppy – Socialization, Training, Activity and Responsibility
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED
This is the perfect 6-week course to learn how to get started with your new puppy or dog.
Each lesson will have two sections.
1) how to be a responsible dog owner,
2) Puppy behaviors including non-aggression toward people and other dogs
Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED
The AKC Canine Good Citizen™ (CGC) is a 6-week program that
provides a perfect framework for training your dog to become a polite member of society. CGC classes
will help you and your dog learn the 10 skills in the program.
1. Accepting a friendly stranger
2. Sitting politely for petting
3. Touch sensitivity and examination
4. Walking on a loose leash
5. Walking politely through a crowd
6. Sit, lay down and stay on cue
7. Recall (coming when called)
8. Reacting politely to another dog
9. Reacting calmly to distraction
10. Reacting calmly to supervised separation
AKC Trick Dog

AKC Community Canine (CGCA)
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED
AKC Community Canine Dogs who pass this 6-week course testing are eligible to earn the AKC’s “CGCA” title. To earn the CGCA title, the dog must be registered or listed with AKC (AKC number, PAL, or AKC Canine Partners number) and, already have a Canine Good Citizen® award/title on record.

Dog stands, sits or lies down and waits under control while the owner sits at the registration table and fills out paperwork, or, while the owner sits and has a snack or visits with someone (e.g., at a park).

Walks on a loose leash in a natural situation (not in a ring)-does not pull. left and right turn stop fast and slow pace

Walks on a loose leash through a crowd. This item is tested in a real crowd, not in a ring.

Dog walks past distractions present; does not pull.

Sit-stay in small group (3 other people with dogs). Owners and dogs are in an informal group while owners have a conversation.

Dog allows person who is carrying something (e.g., purse, computer case, backpack) to approach, pet it, and ask "May I pet your dog?” (Item is put on floor/ground before person pets dog)

“Leave it.” Dog walks by food and follows owner instructions, “Leave it.”

"Down-Stay" and "Sit-Stay" (owner’s choice) at a distance.

Recall with distractions present (coming when called). Handler goes out 20-ft. (off center) and callsdog. Dog comes past a distractor to return to handler.

Dog enters/exits a doorway or narrow passageway (on leash, with owner) in a controlled manner.
